Floyd and Doris dreamed of someday opening their own Vaima. The lagoon was protected by a reef that surrounded Tahiti like a necklace. Sailing canoes would fly across the blue waters of the lagoon and swimmers dove in the coral reefs for fish. Children swam off the boats or jumped of the quay, chasing fish between the coral heads that rose up from the bottom of the lagoon like big trees. In the distance, beyond the outer reef, the jagged peaks of Moorea Island rose above the horizon. Isaac would catch fish, lobster, octopus and sometimes turtle.

The tide in Tahiti is never more than one foot and a wide wood plank connected the sterns of the yachts to the shore. Doris would “walk the plank” carrying baby Karen on her hip, with Keith in tow. The ladies of the village spent the morning preparing the feast. Doris was confined to sitting on a coconut mat where she was fed bananas and treated like royalty. Sometimes their self-steering device worked and sometimes it didn’t. When it didn’t, they took turns at the wheel, four hours on and four hours off.

A decadent dark chocolate mousse serves as the pearl and covers a sweet, slightly tart lilikoi (passion fruit) cream center. All of this is encased between two wafer clamshells. Past the arch, the scene opens up to a view of the beach, coconut trees, and a grassy area. Scattered among the space are Polynesian statues and antiques. If you’re a little early, this is a good spot to take pictures — with your dining companions or of Hawaiian sea turtles that often bask on the beach nearby.

New hotels were being built beside the beaches of Kaanapali, now accessible from new highways. The Christensons decided that if they were ever to open their dream restaurant, it would be on Maui. On dark moonless nights they would catch fresh water prawns using flashlights to illuminate their eyes, spearing them with sharpened nails tied to the end of sticks. By early afternoon the entire village arrived, all of them dressed in colorful pareu’s (lava-lavas), flower leis and flower hei’s (head dresses). An impressive array of food was served in hand-carved wooden bowls and plates.

You won’t regret the food, even if your wallet might. Don’t fret if you get to Maui and realize you didn’t pack a designer cocktail dress. While the restaurant is considered an upscale spot, the attire at Mama’s is what I’d call island casual. During my last visit, I ordered the sesame-rice crusted Hawaiian Kanpachi, which was caught off the coast of Kailua Kona.

Reasonable efforts toward improving seamless, accessible, and unhindered use of websites by customers and potential customers is generally a worthwhile goal. There are only one or two entrees on the menu that don’t consist of seafood. We recommend trying the steak filet if you aren’t a seafood lover.

There was no beer or wine because the monthly supply boat was late, but a good supply of home-made sour orange beer was on hand.
